UNDIP Physics Department Holds ‘UNDIP Global Classroom’, Discusses X-ray CT Developments

SEMARANG — The Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM) at Diponegoro University (UNDIP) successfully hosted an international academic event titled the UNDIP Global Classroom (UGC). The event highlighted the topic “X-ray CT Fundamentals,” which thoroughly explored the basics, simulations, and technological developments of Computed Tomography (CT). The event, held in person at Room K102 FSM UNDIP, took place on Thursday, February 26, 2026, from 09:20 to 11:00 AM WIB.

Featuring an International Expert In this iteration of the UGC, the UNDIP Physics Department featured a leading expert in Applied Physics and Medical Imaging, Prof. Geoff Dougherty from California State University Channel Islands, USA, as the main speaker. The discussion was directly moderated by Dr. Choirul Anam, a Medical Physics expert from UNDIP.

During his presentation, Prof. Geoff Dougherty explained the fundamental principles of image reconstruction in CT Scan machines. He elaborated on the concept of dividing the patient’s body into slices using a ‘sliced bread’ analogy (slice-based imaging) and how X-rays rotate around the patient to measure attenuation levels (ray sums), which are then transformed into Hounsfield Units (CT Numbers).

In addition to theoretical basics and software simulation (CTSim), the lecture material also covered the evolutionary history of CT Scan machines—ranging from the First Generation (pencil beam) to the Fourth Generation with a stationary detector ring. Furthermore, Prof. Geoff explained the determining factors of image quality (contrast, spatial resolution, noise) as well as the handling of various image artifacts such as motion artifacts, beam hardening, and ring artifacts commonly encountered in clinical practice.
